Miami, the spectacle City

The lake at UM is very attractive. Not so many universities provide such a beautiful landscape for their students. However the natural beauty is not enough, the lake needs a fountain. The fountain is the interference of society that transforms nature into spectacle. In other words, society uses water to create an artificial image with a perfect symmetry. Such image represents organization and human’s power over nature.
Not only UM’s lake but also the city of Miami seems to be shaped by the water. One of the city’s most famous street even received the name of ‘’Ocean Drive’’.  As you walk in this street, all you can see is an abundance of colors, fancy cars and sculptured bodies (these are literally sculptured by men, using not water but silicon). The ocean by itself is far and boring. You may swim there and find it refreshing during the warm afternoon. But Miami’s most attractive characteristics can be seen at night. The neon lights, the Latina girls walking in mini-skirts and inviting you to salsa clubs; the artificial and visual spectacle society created in order to satisfy the wealthy tourist’s need of escaping their ordinary life.
